A Family of Eagles and Vigils

The above photo was taken in 1992 in front of the Brown Dining Hall.

Left to right: Mike Deaton a 1958 Eagle and 1960 Vigil, Tony Deaton a 1990 Eagle and a 1992 Vigil and Lloyd Deaton, Jr. a 1938 Eagle, a 1960 Vigil, a former Trustee and a 1960 Silver Beaver recipient.

The Deaton family, originally of Del Rio has a long history in Scouting, not only as Scouts, but also as Volunteers and mentors of many young men over decades of service.

Ruby Deaton the family Matriarch was active as a Den Mother, as they used to be referred to prior to the use of the term “Den Leader”.  Youth look up to Leaders who Lead and that actually care about their well being and their future path in life – Ruby touched many lives during her decades as a Volunteer. Back around 1997, when Ruby was 71 years young the OA wanted to honor her with a Vigil honor.  That night it was cold, cold, cold and since Ruby was no longer a youthful spring chicken they felt it was wise to go bring her in to warmth.  After she found out that she was the only one that was being brought back she said “I’m staying!” and that she did. She was one tough old lady that knew the rules and adhered to them.

The entire Deaton clan have decades of attendance at Camp Fawcett, as scouts, leaders, volunteers and supporters.
